Description

A soil penetrometer is designed to provide a measurable indication of the hardness or compaction in soils, composts or other media to various depths up to 65cm.

Using a soil penetrometer is a simple method of finding the depth in soils at where roots cannot penetrate so limiting water-holding capacity, moisture and nutrient uptake and air space needed for aerobic soil microbiology function.  Measuring compaction depth and density aids in deciding the action to take or the type of implement to use in physically relieving soils.

A soil penetrometer is also useful as an adjunct and precursor to performing Visual Soil Assessments necessary to determine the soil and plant root physical conditions.
